Description:
A large palm tree growing up to 30 m tall with pinnate leaves and smooth grayish un
branched, bark thick at the base, prominent with rings. Old leaves remain on the top
of stem.
Flowering Period:
Throughout the year.
Habitat:
It preferably grows inareas withabundant sunlight andregular
rainfall, generally found near sea sides.
Uses:
Almost allpartsareusefulandhave significanteconomic values.
Its fruit is sweet andeatenas rawandused freshor dried incooking.
It is filled with water which contains vitamins, minerals, sugar
and proteins. It yields oil,milk, fiber and toddy. The outerwood
ofthe stem isused as an astringent gargle in cases of sore throat,
the oilisusedinpreparingointmentstocurecoughandasavermifuge.
Distribution:
Pakistan (cultivated), India, Bangladesh, Thailand, SaudiArabia
and throughout the tropical world. In Pakistan it is scattered
near sea shore.
