Welsh process. See English process.<br />
Wether ill furnace. A furnace with perforated iron bottom, under<br />
which a blast is introduced, <strong>and</strong> upon which zinc-ore (red oxide) is<br />
reduced.<br />
Wharl or Wharr, Newc. A sledge for hauling corves in low<br />
drifts.<br />
Wheal, Corn. A mine.<br />
WJiim or Whimsey. A machine for hoisting by means <strong>of</strong> a verti-<br />
cal drum, revolved by horse or steam power.<br />
Whin or Whinstone, Xewc. Basaltic rock ; any hard, unstrati-<br />
fied rock. In Scotl<strong>and</strong>, greenstone.<br />
Whip. The simplest horse-power hoisting machine, consisting <strong>of</strong><br />
a fixed pulley <strong>and</strong> a hoisting rope passing over it, to which the<br />
animal is directly attached.<br />
White-ash, Penn. See Coal.<br />
White-damp. A poisonous gas sometimes (more rarely than firedamp<br />
or choke-damp, etc.), encountered in coal mines. It has been<br />
supposed to contain carbonic oxide, but this is doubtful.<br />
White furnace. See Howell furnace.<br />
White-lead. Carbonate <strong>of</strong> lead.<br />
White tin, Corn. Metallic tin.<br />
Whits or Witts, Corn. See Tin-witts.<br />
Whitwell stove. A fire-brick hot-blast stove, on the regenerative<br />
system.<br />
Whole-workiny, Xewc. Working where the ground is still whole,<br />
/. e.y has not been penetrated as yet with breasts. Opposed to pillar-<br />
work, or tli(i extraction <strong>of</strong> pillars left to support previous work.<br />
Wild lead. Zinc- blende.<br />
Wicket. A breast. See Breast, <strong>and</strong> Post-<strong>and</strong>-stall.<br />
Wimble. A shell-auger used for boring in s<strong>of</strong>t ground.<br />
Win. To extract ore or coal.<br />
Windbore, Newc. The pipe at the bottom <strong>of</strong> a set <strong>of</strong> pumps.<br />
Winch or Windlass. A man-power hoisting machine, consisting<br />
<strong>of</strong> a horizontal drum with crank h<strong>and</strong>les.<br />
Winding. Hoisting with a rope <strong>and</strong> drum.<br />
Winds. See Winze.<br />
Winning. 1. A new opening. '2. The portion <strong>of</strong> a coal field laid<br />
out for working.<br />
Winning headways. Newc. Headways driven to explore <strong>and</strong><br />
open out the coal seam.<br />
Winze. An interior shaft, usually connecting two levels.
