Neptune poioder. See Explomves.<br />
Kevtral. Of slags, neither acid nor basic ; <strong>of</strong> wrought-irons,<br />
neither red-short nor cold-short ; <strong>of</strong> iron-ores, suitable for the produc-<br />
tion <strong>of</strong> neutral irons.<br />
Niccoliferous or Xickeltferous. Containing nickel.<br />
Nickel ores. Copper-nickel {niccolite, arsenide <strong>of</strong> nickel); antimo-<br />
nial nickel {breithauptite, i[nt\mon\(\e); white nickel [rammelsbergite,<br />
binarsenide); nickel 'pyrites {pentl<strong>and</strong>ite, sulphide <strong>of</strong> nickel <strong>and</strong> iron,<br />
millerite, sulphide) ; niekeliferous gray antimony {nllmannife, arsenan-<br />
timonide); niekeliferous serpentine {refdanskite, hyi]rous magnesian<br />
silicate); also, niccoliferous ores <strong>of</strong> copper, cobalt, manganese, etc.<br />
Nicking, Newc. The cutting made by the hewer at the side <strong>of</strong><br />
the face. Nickings is the small coal produced in making the nicking.<br />
Nicking-trunk. A tub in which metalliferous slimes are washed.<br />
Nip, Newc. 1. A crush <strong>of</strong> pillars or workings. 2. See Pinch.<br />
Nipping-fork. A tool for supporting a column <strong>of</strong> bore-rods while<br />
raising or lowering them.<br />
Nitroglycerin. See Explosives.<br />
Nittings. The refuse <strong>of</strong> good ore.<br />
Noble metals. The metals which have so little affinity for oxygen<br />
(/. e., are so highly electronegative) that their oxides are reduced by<br />
the mere application <strong>of</strong> heat without a reagent; in other words, the<br />
metals least liable to oxidation under ordinary conditions. The list<br />
includes gold, silver, mercury, <strong>and</strong> the platinum group (including<br />
palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, <strong>and</strong> osmium). The term<br />
is <strong>of</strong> alchemistic origin.<br />
Noddle or Nodule. A small rounded mass.<br />
Noger. A jumper drill.<br />
Nogs, Derb. <strong>and</strong> Corx. Square blocks or logs <strong>of</strong> wood, piled on<br />
one another to support a mine ro<strong>of</strong>.<br />
Nose. An accumulation <strong>of</strong> chilled material around the inner end<br />
<strong>of</strong> a tuyere in a smelting shaft-furnace, protecting <strong>and</strong> prolonging<br />
the tuyere.<br />
Nose-helve, ExG. See Frontal hammer.<br />
Nids. Small coal.<br />
Occlusion. The mechanical retention <strong>of</strong> gases in the pores <strong>of</strong><br />
solids.<br />
Ochre. A term applied to metallic oxides occurring in an earthy,<br />
pulverulent condition, as iron ochre, molybdic ochre.
