In gold <strong>and</strong> silver <strong>mining</strong>, <strong>and</strong> throughout the Western States, the<br />
ton is the short ton <strong>of</strong> 2000 pounds.<br />
Tonite. A nitrated gun-cotton, used in blasting.<br />
Top-wall. See Hanging-wall.<br />
Torta, Sp. A flat heap <strong>of</strong> silver ore [slime or pulp) prepared for<br />
the patio process.<br />
Tossing or tozing, Corn. 1. Washing ores by violent agitation in<br />
water, their subsidence being accelerated by packing ov striking with<br />
a hammer the keeve in which the operation is performed. Chimming<br />
is a similar process on a smaller scale. 2. Refining tin by allowing<br />
it, while molten, to fall several feet through the air.<br />
Touchstone. A black, hard stone (basalt or jasper), on which the<br />
fineness <strong>of</strong> an alloy <strong>of</strong> gold <strong>and</strong> silver can be tested by comparing its<br />
streak with that <strong>of</strong> a piece <strong>of</strong> alloy [touch-needle) <strong>of</strong> known fineness.<br />
Tough-cake. Refined or commercial copper.<br />
Toughening. Refining, as <strong>of</strong> copper or gold.<br />
Tough-pitch. See Tough-cake.<br />
Towt, Newc. a piece <strong>of</strong> old rope.<br />
Train. See Roll-train.<br />
Tram, Wales. 1. A four-wheeled truck to carry a tub,corve^ or<br />
hutch, or to carry coal or ore on a railroad. 2. One <strong>of</strong> the rails <strong>of</strong><br />
a tramroad or railroad.<br />
Trap. In miners' parlance, any dark, igneous or apparently<br />
igneous, or volcanic rock.<br />
Trap-door. See Weather-door.<br />
Tropiche, Sp. A rude grinding machine, composed <strong>of</strong> two stones,<br />
<strong>of</strong> which the upper is fastened to a long pole.<br />
Trapper. Newc. A boy who opens <strong>and</strong> shuts the trap-door.<br />
Tribute, Corn. A portion <strong>of</strong> ore given to the miner for his labor.<br />
Tributors are miners working under contract, to be paid by a tribute<br />
<strong>of</strong> ore or its equivalent price, the basis <strong>of</strong> the remuneration being<br />
the amount <strong>of</strong> clean ore contained in the crude product.<br />
Trip-hammer. See Tilt-hammer.<br />
Trogue. A wooden trough, forming a drain.<br />
Trolly. A small four or two-wheeled truck, without a body.<br />
The two-wheeled trolly is used in a rolling-mill to wheel the puddle-<br />
balls to the squeezer.<br />
Trombe or Trompe, Fr. An apparatus for producing an air-blast<br />
by means <strong>of</strong> a falling stream <strong>of</strong> water, which mechanically carries<br />
air down with it, to be subsequently separated <strong>and</strong> compressed in a<br />
reservoir or drum below.<br />
