Tamp. To fill (usually with clay-tamping) the bore-hole or other<br />
opening through which an explosive charge has been introduced for<br />
blasting.<br />
Tamping-bar, Corn.<br />
Tank. A subterranean reservoir into which a pump delivers<br />
water for another pump to raise.<br />
Tap-finder. The cinder drawn from a puddling-fiwnace or<br />
btoomary.<br />
Tap-hole. The opening through which the molten metal is<br />
tapped or drawn from a furnace.<br />
Teem, Eng. 1. To dump. 2. To pour steel from a melting-pot.<br />
Temper. 1. To grind <strong>and</strong> mix plastic materials, such as clav, or<br />
the ingredients <strong>of</strong> mortar. 2. To give the metals (especially steel) the<br />
desired degree <strong>of</strong> hardness <strong>and</strong> elasticity by a process <strong>of</strong> heating <strong>and</strong><br />
cooling, suitably regulated. A metallic compound in which these<br />
qualities can thus be produced is said to temper, or to take temper.<br />
Tempering-bar. See Furgen.<br />
Temper-screw. A screw-connection for lengthening the column <strong>of</strong><br />
boring- rods as boring advances.<br />
Tenant- helve, Eng. See Frontal-hammer.<br />
Tepetate, Sp. Waste rock <strong>and</strong> rubbish in a mine.<br />
Terne-plafe. A variety <strong>of</strong> tin-plate coated with an alloy <strong>of</strong> one-<br />
third tin, <strong>and</strong> two-thirds lead.<br />
Test. See Cupel.<br />
Te^t-ring. An oval iron frame for holding a test or movable<br />
cupelling-hearth.<br />
Thermo-aqueous. Produced by, or related to, the action <strong>of</strong> heated<br />
waters.<br />
Thill, Newc. The floor <strong>of</strong> a coal mine.<br />
Thirling. See Thurling.<br />
Thomas <strong>and</strong> Gilchrist process. See Basic lining process.<br />
Three-high train. A roll-train composed <strong>of</strong> three rolls, the bar<br />
being entered on one side between the bottom <strong>and</strong> the middle roll,<br />
<strong>and</strong> on the other side between the middle <strong>and</strong> the upper roll. The<br />
passes in both directions thus take place without reversing the move-<br />
ment <strong>of</strong> the rolls, as is done in so-called" reversing rolls.<br />
Throio. A dislocation or fault <strong>of</strong> a vein or stratum, which has<br />
been throicn up or doicn by the movement.<br />
Throunng, S. Staff. The operation <strong>of</strong> breaking out the spurns,<br />
so as to leave the hanging coal unsupported, except by its own co-<br />
hesion.
