Sublimation. The volatilization <strong>and</strong> condensation <strong>of</strong> a solid sub-<br />

stance, without fusion.<br />

Sublimation-theory. The theory that a vein was filled first with<br />

metal lie vapors.<br />

Sucher-rod. The pump-rod <strong>of</strong> an oil-well.<br />

Sulphur. 1. Iron pyrites. 2. Carburetted or sulphuretted hy-<br />

drogen.<br />

Sulphurets, Pac. In miners' phrase, the undecomposed metallic<br />

ores, usually sulphides. Chiefly applied to auriferous pyrites.<br />

Sump, Corn, (from Germ. Sump/.). The space left below the<br />

lowest l<strong>and</strong>ing in a shaft to collect the mine-water. The lowest<br />

pump draws from it. 2. Newc. That part <strong>of</strong> ajudd <strong>of</strong> coal which<br />

is extracted first.<br />

Sump-fuse. A waterpro<strong>of</strong> fuse.<br />

Swad, Newc. a thin layer <strong>of</strong> stone or refuse coal at the bottom<br />

<strong>of</strong> the seam.<br />

Swape. An implement for shaping the edge <strong>of</strong> a boring-bit.<br />

Swalls, Swallows or Swallow -holes. Surface holes caused by the sub-<br />

sidence <strong>of</strong> rocks ;<br />

or openings into which mine-water disappears.<br />

''^loamp. A depression in a nearly horizontal bed, in wiiich water<br />

may collect.<br />

Sicedish pyrocess^. See German process.<br />

Sweeping table. A stationary buddle.<br />

Sweeps. The dust <strong>of</strong> the workshops <strong>of</strong> jewellers, goldsmiths,<br />

silversmiths, <strong>and</strong> assayers <strong>and</strong> refiners <strong>of</strong> gold <strong>and</strong> silver.<br />

Sireet-roasting. See Roa.sting.<br />

Synclinal. The axis <strong>of</strong> a depression <strong>of</strong> the strata ; also the de-<br />

pression itself. Opposed to anticlinal, which is the axis <strong>of</strong> an eleva-<br />

tion.<br />

Tackle, Corn. The windlass, rope, <strong>and</strong> kibble.<br />

Tacklers, Dkrb. Small ciiains put around loaded corves.<br />

Tail-house, Tail-mill. The buildings in which failings are treated.<br />

Tailing. See Blossom.<br />

Tailings. The lighter <strong>and</strong> s<strong>and</strong>y portions <strong>of</strong> the ore on a buddle<br />

or in a sluice. The headings are accumulated or discharged at the<br />

upper end, the middlings in the middle, while the tailings e-scape at<br />

the foot. The term tailings is used in a general sense for the refuse<br />

<strong>of</strong> reduction-processes other than smelting.<br />

Tail-race. The channel in which tailings, suspended in water, are<br />

conducted away.
