Hurdy-gurdy wheel. A water-wheel operated by the direct im-<br />
pact <strong>of</strong> a stream upon its radially-placed paddles.<br />
HiisliiiKj. The discovery <strong>of</strong> veins by tlie accumulation <strong>and</strong> sudden<br />
discharge <strong>of</strong> water, which washes away the surface soil <strong>and</strong> lays bare<br />
the rock. See Booming.<br />
Hutch. 1, Scot. A low car, suited both to run in a level <strong>and</strong><br />
to be hoisted on a cage. 2, Corn. A cistern or box for washing<br />
ore. See Jig.<br />
Hydraulicking , Pac. Washing down a bank <strong>of</strong> earth or gravel<br />
by the use <strong>of</strong> pipes, conveying water under high pressure.<br />
Mria furnace. See Leopoldi furnace.<br />
Impregnation. An ore-deposit consisting <strong>of</strong> the country-rock<br />
impregnated with ore, usually without definite boundaries.<br />
Inbye or Inbyeside, Newc. Further into a mine, away from the<br />
shaft.<br />
Incline. 1. A shaft not vertical; usually on the dip <strong>of</strong> a vein.<br />
See Slope. 2. A plane, not necessarily under ground.<br />
Indicator. 1. An instrument for showing at any moment the<br />
position <strong>of</strong> the cage in the shaft. 2. An instrument for recording,<br />
by a diagram,, upon a card the varying pressure <strong>of</strong> the steam in the<br />
cylinder <strong>of</strong> a steam-engine during the stroke.<br />
Infiltration-theory. The theory that a vein was filled by the in-<br />
filtration <strong>of</strong> mineral solutions.<br />
Ingot. A cast bar or block <strong>of</strong> metal.<br />
Injection-theory. The theory that a vein was filled first with<br />
molten mineral.<br />
In place. Of rock, occupying, relative to surrounding masses,<br />
the position that it had when formed.<br />
Inquartation. See Quartation.<br />
Intake. The passage by which the ventilating current enters a<br />
mine. See Downcast, which is more appropriate for a shaft ; Intake<br />
for an adit.<br />
Inwalls. The interior walls or lining <strong>of</strong> a shaft-furnoAie.<br />
Iredone or Ironstone, Corn. Greenstone.<br />
Irestone. Hard clay slate; hornstone ; hornblende.<br />
Iron. The principal varieties <strong>of</strong> iron are wrought-iron <strong>and</strong> cast-<br />
iron (see Pig-iron). Wrought-iron, also called bar-iron <strong>and</strong> weld-iron,<br />
is the product <strong>of</strong> the forge or the puddling furnace, cas^iVou <strong>of</strong> the<br />
blast furnace. The former approaches pure iron ; the latter is an<br />
alloy <strong>of</strong> iron <strong>and</strong> carbon. Steel (except some <strong>of</strong> the so-called " low"<br />
