Grampus, U. S. The tongs with which bloomary loups <strong>and</strong> billeta<br />
are h<strong>and</strong>led.<br />
Granzas, Sp. Small pieces <strong>of</strong> ore.<br />
Graphite. A crystalline form <strong>of</strong> carbon.<br />
Graphitic carbon. That portion <strong>of</strong> the carbon in iron or steel<br />
which is present as graphite.<br />
Grass, Corn. The surface over a mine. Bringing ores to grass<br />
is taking them out <strong>of</strong> the mine.<br />
Grassero, Sp. A slag-heap.<br />
Grate, Corn. See Screen (as applied to stamps).<br />
Grate coal, pENN. See Coal.<br />
Gravel-mine, U. S. An accumulation <strong>of</strong> auriferous gravel.<br />
Ch'ueso, Sp. Lump ore. The term is in use at the quicksilver<br />
mines <strong>of</strong> California.<br />
Green s<strong>and</strong>. S<strong>and</strong> u.sed for moulds without previous drying or<br />
mixture.<br />
Gh^iy ore, CoRN. Copper-glance. See Copper-ores.<br />
Gray slay. The slag from the Flintshire lead furnace. It is rich<br />
in lead.<br />
Griddle, Corn. A miner's sieve to separate ore from halvans.<br />
Grip. A small, narrow cavity.<br />
Grizzly, Pac. A grating to catch <strong>and</strong> throw out large stones<br />
from sluices.<br />
Groove or Crave. 1. Derb. A mine; from the Germ. Ch'ube.<br />

Ground, CORN. The rock in which a vein is found; also, any<br />
given portion <strong>of</strong> the mineral deposit itself.<br />
Growan, CORN. Decomposed granite ; sometimes the granite rock.<br />
Gubbin. A kind <strong>of</strong> ironstone.<br />
Crundy. Granulated pig iron.<br />
Guard. A support in front <strong>of</strong> a roll-train to guide the bar into<br />
the groove, sometimes called a side-guide.<br />
Guides. 1. The timbers at the side <strong>of</strong> a shaft to steady <strong>and</strong> guide<br />
the cage. 2. The holes in a cross-beam through which the stems<br />
<strong>of</strong> the stamps in a stamp-mill rise <strong>and</strong> fall. 3. In a rolling-mill a<br />
guide is a wedge-shaj>ed piece held in the groove <strong>of</strong> a roll to prevent<br />
the sticking <strong>of</strong> the bar by peeling it out <strong>of</strong> the groove. When the<br />
guide is held by a hanger or counter-weight against the under side<br />
<strong>of</strong> the roll, it is called a hanging-guide.
