Ramble, Newc A shale bed on the top <strong>of</strong> a coal seam, which<br />

falls as the coal is removed.<br />

Rancho, Sp. An estate or property ; a farm (Pac. ranch).<br />

R<strong>and</strong>om. The direction <strong>of</strong> a rake-vein.<br />

Rapper. A lever or hammer at the top <strong>of</strong> a shaft or inclined<br />

plane, for signals from the bottom.<br />

Raschette furnace. A.shaft furnace used in lead, copper, <strong>and</strong> iron<br />

smelting, <strong>and</strong> having an oblong rectangular or oval horizontal<br />

section.<br />

Reaction process. See Roasting <strong>and</strong> reaction process.<br />

Realgar. Sulphide <strong>of</strong> arsenic.<br />

Reamer. A tool for enlarging a bore-hole.<br />

Record. To enter in the book <strong>of</strong> the proper <strong>of</strong>ficer (usually a dis-<br />

trict or county <strong>of</strong>ficer) the name, position, description, <strong>and</strong> date <strong>of</strong> a<br />

<strong>mining</strong> claim or location. See District.<br />

Red-ash, Penn. See Coal.<br />

Redevance, Fr. A tax, duty, or rent. In <strong>mining</strong> law it means a<br />

tax or duty payable to the government or to the surface owner.<br />

Red-lead. See 3Iinium.<br />

Red-short. Brittle at red heat. See Cold-short.<br />

Reduce. 1. To deprive <strong>of</strong> oxygen. 2. In general, to treat metal-<br />

lurgically for the production <strong>of</strong> metal.<br />

Reed, Corn. See Spire.<br />

Reef, Austr. See Lode.<br />

Refinery. See Run-out fire.<br />

Refining. I. The purification <strong>of</strong> crude metallic products. The<br />

refining <strong>of</strong> "base bullion" (silver-lead) produces nearly pure lead<br />

<strong>and</strong> silver. 2. The conversion <strong>of</strong> gray into wdiite oast iron in a<br />

run-out Jire.<br />

Refractory. Resisting the action <strong>of</strong> heat <strong>and</strong> chemical reagents ;<br />

a quality undesirable in ores, but desirable in furnace-linings, etc.<br />

Regenerator. A chamber, filled with open-work <strong>of</strong> brick, to take<br />

up the heat <strong>of</strong> the gases <strong>of</strong> combustion from a furnace, <strong>and</strong> subse-<br />

quently impart it to a current <strong>of</strong> air, the air <strong>and</strong> gas being conducted<br />

alternately through the chamber. See Siemens furnace.<br />

Regule, Fr. A copj)er rcgulns from which most <strong>of</strong> the impuri-<br />

ties have been removed by liquation.<br />

Regulus. 1. The metallic mass which sinks to the bottom <strong>of</strong> a<br />

furnace or crucible, separating itself by gravity from the superna-<br />

tant slag or matt. 2. An intermediate product obtained in smelting<br />

ores, specially those <strong>of</strong> copper, lead, silver <strong>and</strong> nickel, <strong>and</strong> consisting
