Auger-stem. The bar t(^ which a drilling-bit is attached.<br />
Auget or Augette. A priming tube, used in blasting.<br />
Augustin jyrocess. The treatment <strong>of</strong> silver ores by chloridizing,<br />
roasting, lixiviation with hot brine, <strong>and</strong> precipitation with copper.<br />
Auriferous.<br />
Containing gold.<br />
Average produce, Corn. The (quantity <strong>of</strong> pure or fine copper in<br />
one hundred parts <strong>of</strong> ore.<br />
Average st<strong>and</strong>ard, Corn. The price per ton <strong>of</strong> pure or fine cop-<br />
per in the ore.<br />
Aviador, Sp. A person who habilitates a mine; that is, who fur-<br />
nishes the money for working it by a contract with proprietors,<br />
Azogueria, Sp, 1. The amalgamating works, 2. The processs <strong>of</strong><br />
amalgamation.<br />
Azogues, Sp, Common or inferior ores.<br />
Back, Corn. 1. With reference to an adit, drift or stope, the<br />
|)art <strong>of</strong> the vein between it <strong>and</strong> the next working above, or the sur-<br />

Bach-casing, Eng. A temporary shaft-lining <strong>of</strong> bricks laid dry,<br />
<strong>and</strong> supported at intervals upon curbs. When the stone-head, has<br />
been reached, the permanent masonry lining is built upon it inside<br />
<strong>of</strong> the back-casing.<br />
Back-end, Ne^vc, The part o^'ajudd remaining after the sump<br />
has been removed.<br />

Balance-bob. A heavy lever ballasted at one end, <strong>and</strong> attached<br />
at the other to the pump-rod, the weight <strong>of</strong> which it thus helps to<br />
carry. When the shaft is deep, <strong>and</strong> the pump-rods are consequently<br />
very heavy, balance-bobs are put in at intervals <strong>of</strong> 200 or 300 feet,<br />
thus relieving the strain on the rods themselves <strong>and</strong> on the engine.<br />
Balk, Newc. A hitch producing a nip.<br />
Ball<strong>and</strong>., Derij. Pulverulent lead ore.<br />
Ballast-shovel. A round-mouthed shovel.
