Overman, Eng. The <strong>mining</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial next in rank below the<br />
vianarjcr, who is next below the agent.<br />
Overpoled copper. Copper from which all the suboxide has been<br />
removed by •poling.<br />
(Xvidation. A chemical union with oxygen.<br />
Pack. A wall or pillar built o^ gob to f^upport the ro<strong>of</strong>".<br />
Pair or Pare, Corn. Two or more miners working in common.<br />
Pan. 1. See Panning. 2. A cylindrical vat <strong>of</strong> iron, stone, or<br />
wood, or these combined, in which ore is ground with rauUers <strong>and</strong><br />
amalgamated. See Amalgamation.<br />
Pane. The striking-face <strong>of</strong> a hammer.<br />
Panel. 1. A heap <strong>of</strong> dre.-sed ore. 2. A system <strong>of</strong> coal-extrac-<br />
tion in which the ground is laid <strong>of</strong>f in separate districts or panels,<br />
pillars <strong>of</strong> extra size being left between.<br />
Panning, AusT. <strong>and</strong> Pac. Washing earth or crushed rock in a<br />
pan, by agitation with water, to obtain the particles <strong>of</strong> greatest spe-<br />
cific gravity which it contains (chiefly practiced for gold, also for<br />
quicksilver, diamonds, <strong>and</strong> other gems).<br />
Parachute. 1. A kind <strong>of</strong> .so/c/^Z-c^^^/i for shaft cages. 2. In rod-<br />
boring, a cage with a leather cover to prevent a too rapid fall <strong>of</strong> the<br />
rods in case <strong>of</strong> accident.<br />

Parcel, Corn. A heap <strong>of</strong> dressed ore ready for sale.<br />
Parkes process. The desilverization <strong>of</strong> lead by treatment with<br />
Parrot coal, Scot. See Coal.<br />
Parting. 1. A small joint in coal or rock, or a layer <strong>of</strong> rock in<br />
a coal seam. 2. The separation <strong>of</strong> two metals in an alloy, especially<br />
the separation <strong>of</strong> gold <strong>and</strong> silver by means <strong>of</strong> nitric or sulphuric<br />
acid.<br />
Parting-s<strong>and</strong>. Fine dry s<strong>and</strong>, which is sifted over the parting-s<br />
in a mould to facilitate their separation when the Jiask is opened.<br />
Pcuss, Corn. 1. An opening in a mine through which ore is shot<br />
from a higher to a lower level. See Shoot. 2. In rolling mills the<br />
passage <strong>of</strong> the bar between the rolls. When the bar passes "on the<br />
flat" it is called a Jlatting-pass ; if "on the edge," an edging-paas.<br />
Patent fuel, Eng. The fuel produced by the agglomeration <strong>of</strong><br />
coal-slack into lumps.<br />
Patera process. See Joachimsthal process.<br />
