Cocered-binding , Corn. See P/ank-timberinf/.<br />

Coio. A kind <strong>of</strong> self-acting brake for inclined planes; a trailer.<br />

Coiol. See Water-barrel.<br />

Coicper-Siemens stove. A hot-blast stove <strong>of</strong> firebrick on the<br />

regenerative-principle.<br />

Coyoting, Pac. Mining in irregular openings or burrows, com-<br />

parable to the holes <strong>of</strong> coyotes or prairie foxes.<br />

Crab. A machine for moving heavy weights. Specially the en-<br />

gines employed for lowering into place the pumps, rods, pipes, etc.,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Cornish pit-icork.<br />

Cradle, Pac. See Rocker.<br />

Cramp. A pillar <strong>of</strong> rock or mineral left for support.<br />

Cranch. Part <strong>of</strong> a vein left by old workers.<br />

Craze or Creaze, Corn. The tin-ore which collects m the middle<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the huddle.<br />

Creep, Newc. A rising <strong>of</strong> the floor <strong>of</strong> a gangway, occasioned<br />

by the weight <strong>of</strong> incumbent strata, in pillar workings. Also any<br />

slow movement <strong>of</strong> <strong>mining</strong> ground.<br />

Cretaceous. 1. Chalky. 2. See Geologicalformations.<br />

Crevet. A crucible.<br />

Crevice, Pac. 1. A shallow fissure in the bed-rock under a gold<br />

placer, in which small but highly concentrated deposits <strong>of</strong> gold are<br />

found. 2. The fissure containing a vein.<br />

Crib. 1. See Curb. 2. A structure composed <strong>of</strong> frames <strong>of</strong> timber<br />

laid horizontally upon one another, or <strong>of</strong> timbers built up as in the<br />

walls <strong>of</strong> a log-cabin. 3. A miner's luncheon.<br />

Cribbing. Close timbering, as the lining <strong>of</strong> a shaft, or the con-<br />

struction <strong>of</strong> cribs <strong>of</strong> timber or timber <strong>and</strong> earth or rock, to support<br />

a ro<strong>of</strong>.<br />

Cribble. A sieve.<br />

Crop. 1. Corn. See Crop-tin. 2. The basset or outcrop <strong>of</strong> strata<br />

at the surface. 3. To leave coal at the bottom <strong>of</strong> a bed.<br />

Cropping out. The rising <strong>of</strong> layers <strong>of</strong> rock to the surface. That<br />

part <strong>of</strong> a vein which appears above the surface is called the<br />

cropping or outcrop.<br />

Crop-tin. The chief portion <strong>of</strong> tin-ore separated from waste in the<br />

principal dressing operation.<br />

Cross-cou7'se, Corn. An intersecting (usually a barren) vein.<br />

Cross-cut. A level driven across the course <strong>of</strong> a vein, or, in gen-<br />

eral, across the direction <strong>of</strong> the main workings (as to connect two<br />

parallel gangNA'ays), or across the " grain <strong>of</strong> coal."
