Stove. The oven in which the blast <strong>of</strong> a furnace is heated.<br />
Stove-coal, Penn. See Coal.<br />
Stoivbord, Newc. A place into which rubbish is put.<br />
Stowce. 1. A windlass. 2. Derb. Stoicces are wooden l<strong>and</strong>-<br />
marks, placed to indicate possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>mining</strong> ground.<br />
Stovnng. A method <strong>of</strong> <strong>mining</strong> in which all the material <strong>of</strong> the<br />
vein is removed <strong>and</strong> the waste is packed into the space left by the<br />
working.<br />
Straighteninr/ press. A power-press to straighten iron <strong>and</strong> steel<br />
bars, such as rails, shafting, etc.<br />
Strake, CoRX. Au inclined launder for separating or tying ground<br />
ore in water.<br />
Stratum. A bed or layer.<br />
Sti'cak. The powder <strong>of</strong> a mineral, or the mark which it makes<br />
when rubbed upon a harder surface.<br />
Stream-tin, Corn. Tin-ore in alluvial deposits, as pebbles.<br />
Stream- work. Corn. AVork on stream-tin.<br />
Streamers, Corn. Searchers for stream-tin.<br />
Striated. Marked with parallel grooves or strim.<br />
Strike. The direction <strong>of</strong> a horizontal line, drawn in the middle<br />
plane <strong>of</strong> a vein or stratum not horizontal.<br />
String, Corn. A small vein.<br />
Stringing-deals, Eng. Thin planks, nailed to the inside <strong>of</strong> the<br />
curbs in a shaft, so as to suspend each curb from those above it.<br />
Strip. To remove from a quarry, or other open working, the<br />
overlying earth <strong>and</strong> disintegrated or barren surface rock.<br />
Studdlcs, Corn. 1. Props supporting the middle <strong>of</strong> stulls. 2.<br />
Distance-pieces between successive frames <strong>of</strong> timbering.<br />
Stull, Corn. A platform {stull- covering), laid on timbers (stull-<br />
pieces), braced across a working from side to side, to support workmen<br />
or to carry ore or waste.<br />
Stidm. See Adit. From the Germ. Slollen.<br />
Slump, Penn. a small pillar <strong>of</strong> coal, left at the foot <strong>of</strong> a breast<br />
to protect the gangivay.<br />
Stup. A pulverized mixture <strong>of</strong> clay <strong>and</strong> coke or coal. Probably<br />
from the Germ. GestUbhe.<br />
Sturt. A tribute-hargam which turns out pr<strong>of</strong>itable for the miner.<br />
Stythe, Newc. Choke-damp.
