bauxite, a hydrous compound <strong>of</strong> alumina, ferric<br />
Amalgamation. 1. The production <strong>of</strong> an amalgam or alloy <strong>of</strong><br />
mercury. 2. The process in which gold <strong>and</strong> silver are extracted<br />
from pulverized ores by producing an amalgam, from which the<br />
mercury is afterwards expelled. See Retorting.<br />
Amalgamator. 1. A machine for amalgamating ores. 2. The<br />
workmen in charge <strong>of</strong> such a machine.<br />
American forge. See Catalan forge.<br />
Anemomete)'. An instrument for measuring the rapidity <strong>of</strong> an air-<br />
current.<br />
Annealing. 1. The gradual cooling <strong>of</strong> glass or metal from a high<br />
temperature, to render it less brittle. 2. See Malleable castings.<br />
Anthracite. See Coal.<br />
Anticlinal. The line <strong>of</strong> a crest, above or under ground, on the<br />
two sides <strong>of</strong> which the strata dip in opposite directions. The con-<br />
verse <strong>of</strong> .synclinal.<br />
Antimony ores. Native antimony ; .^tibnite (sulphide <strong>of</strong> antimony)<br />
valentinite <strong>and</strong> senarmontite (oxides).<br />
Apex. In the U.S. Revenue Statutes, the end or edge <strong>of</strong> a vein<br />
nearest the surface.<br />
Apolvillados, Sp. Ores superior in quality to the azogues.<br />
Appall oven. An oven for the manufacture <strong>of</strong> coke, differing from<br />
the Belgian in that it is divided into vertical compartments.<br />
Aprons. See Copper-plates.<br />
Arch, Corn. 1. A portion <strong>of</strong> a lode left st<strong>and</strong>ing when the rest is<br />
extracted, to support the hanging wall or because it is too poor for<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>itable extraction. 2. The ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> a reverberatory furnace.<br />
Arenaceous. Silicious or s<strong>and</strong>y (<strong>of</strong> rocks).<br />
Arends' tap. An arrangement bv which the molten lead from the<br />
crucible <strong>of</strong> a shaft-furnace is drawn through an " inverted siphon "<br />
into an exterior basin, from which it can be ladled without disturb-<br />
ing the furnace.<br />
Arenillos, Sp. Refuse earth.<br />
Argentiferous. Containing silver.<br />
Argillaceous. Containing clay.<br />
Arm. The inclined member or leg <strong>of</strong> a set or frame <strong>of</strong> timber.<br />
Arrastre, Sp. Apparatus for grinding <strong>and</strong> mixing ores by means<br />
<strong>of</strong> a heavy stone dragged around upon a circular bed. The arrastre<br />
is chietly used for ores containing free gold, <strong>and</strong> amalgamation is
