Hogger-pipe. The upper terminal pipe <strong>of</strong> the <strong>mining</strong> pump.<br />
Hogger-pump. The topmost pump in a shaft.<br />
Holing. 1. The working <strong>of</strong> a lower part <strong>of</strong> a bed <strong>of</strong> coal for<br />
bringing down the upper mass. 2, The final act <strong>of</strong> connecting two<br />
workings underground.<br />
MoUoic-fire, Eng. A kind <strong>of</strong> hearth with blast, used for reheating<br />
the stamps produced in the South Welsh process <strong>of</strong> fining, or the bars<br />
<strong>of</strong> blister-steel in the manufacture <strong>of</strong> shear-steel.<br />
Hollway process. The removal <strong>of</strong> sulphur from iron <strong>and</strong> copper<br />
sulphides by fusion <strong>and</strong> pneumatic treatment, analogous to the manner<br />
in which carbon, etc., are removed in the Bessemer process.<br />
Homogeneous metal. A variety <strong>of</strong> ing<strong>of</strong>-mefal produced by the<br />
open-heartli process. See Steel.<br />
Hopper. 1. A trap at the foot <strong>of</strong> a shoot for regulating the con-<br />
tents <strong>of</strong> a wagon. 2. A place <strong>of</strong> deposit for coal or ore.<br />
Horn. See Spoon.<br />
Horse, Corn. 1. A mass <strong>of</strong> country-rook inclosed in an ore-deposit.<br />
2. See Salam<strong>and</strong>er.<br />
Horse-hack, Newc. A portion <strong>of</strong> the ro<strong>of</strong> or floor which bulges<br />
or intrudes into the coal.<br />

Horse-flesh ore, Corn. Bornite. See Copper-ores.<br />
Horse-gin. Gearing for hoisting by horse-power.<br />
Hot-bed. A platform in a rolling-mill on which rolled bars lie to<br />
Hot-blast. Air forced into a furnace after having been heated.<br />
H<strong>of</strong>ching, NoRTH Eng. See Jigging.<br />
House <strong>of</strong> icater, Corn. A cavity or spacefilled with water.<br />
Howell furnace. A form <strong>of</strong> revolving roasting furnace.<br />
H-jnece. That part <strong>of</strong> a plunger-lift in which the valves or clacks<br />
are fixed.<br />
Hudge. An iron bucket for hoisting ore or coal.<br />
Hulk. See Dzhu.<br />
Hael, Conn. See Wheal.<br />
Hungry. A term applied to hard barren vein-matter, such as<br />
white quartz (not discolored with iron oxide).<br />
Hunt & Douglas process. The treatment <strong>of</strong> copper oxide (or<br />
roasted sulphide) ores by dissolving the oxides <strong>of</strong> copper in a hot<br />
solution <strong>of</strong> protochloride <strong>of</strong> iron <strong>and</strong> common salt. From the solu-<br />
tion thus obtained, metallic iron precipitates metallic copper, at the<br />
same time regenerating the protochloride <strong>of</strong> iron for further use.
