Frue vanner. A variety <strong>of</strong> continuously working percussion-<br />
Fulguration. See Blieh.<br />
Furgen. A round rod used for sounding a bloomarv fire.<br />
Furnace. 1. A structure in which heat is produced by the com-<br />
bustion <strong>of</strong> fuel. 2, A structure in wliich, with the aid <strong>of</strong> heat so<br />
produced, the operations <strong>of</strong> roasting, reduction, fusion, steam-gener-<br />
ation, desiccation, etc, are carried on, or, as in some mines, the<br />
upcast air-current is heated, to facilitate its ascent <strong>and</strong> thus aid ven-<br />
tilation.<br />
Furnace cadmium or cadmia. The oxide <strong>of</strong> zinc which accumu-<br />
lates in the chimneys <strong>of</strong> furnaces smelting zinciferous ores.<br />
Furtherance, Newo. An extra price paid to hewers when they<br />
also put the coal.<br />
Fuse. A tube or casing filled with combustible material, by<br />
means <strong>of</strong> which a blast is ignited <strong>and</strong> exploded.<br />
Gad. 1. A steel wedge. 2. A small iron punch with a wooden<br />
h<strong>and</strong>le used to break up ore.<br />
Galemador, Sp. A small Mexican furnace for roasting silver ores.<br />
Gale, Eng. (Forest <strong>of</strong> Dean.) A grant <strong>of</strong> <strong>mining</strong> ground.<br />
Galiage. Royalty.<br />
Gallery. A level or drift.<br />
Gallery-furnoice, A retort-furnace used in the distillation <strong>of</strong><br />
mercury.<br />
Gallows-frame. A frame over a shaft, carrying the pulleys for<br />
the hoisting cables.<br />
Galvanize. To coat with zinc.<br />
Ganister. A mixture <strong>of</strong> ground quartz <strong>and</strong> fire-clay, used in lin-<br />
ing Bessemer converters.<br />
Gang. 1. A mine. 2. A set <strong>of</strong> miners.<br />
Gangue. The mineral associated with the ore in a vein.<br />
Gangway. 1. A main level, applied chiefly to coal mines. 2.<br />
Newc. a wooden bridge.<br />
Garl<strong>and</strong>, S. Staff. A trough or gutter round the inside <strong>of</strong> a<br />
shaft to catch the water running down the sides.<br />
Gas-coal. See Coal.<br />
Gas-furnace. A furnace employing gaseous fuel.<br />
Gash. Applied to a vein wide above, narrow below, <strong>and</strong> termi-<br />
nating in depth within the formation it traverses.
