level or air-way driv^en in a mine. 3. In lonc/-iraJI workings, a<br />
narrow passage driven upward from a gangway in starting a work-<br />
ing in order to give a loose end.<br />
Headings. In ore-dressing, the heavier portions collecting at the<br />
upper end <strong>of</strong> a buddle or sluice, as opposed to the tailings, which<br />
escape at the other end, <strong>and</strong> the middlings, which receive further<br />
treatment.<br />
Head-piece. See Cap.<br />
Headsman, Newc. See Putter.<br />
Head-stocks. See Gallows-frame.<br />
Head-tree, Newc. See Cap.<br />
Headway, Newc. See Cross- heading. The headvays are the<br />
.second set <strong>of</strong> excavations in post-<strong>and</strong>-stall work.<br />
Heap, Newc. The refuse at the pit's mouth.<br />
Hearth. 1 . The<br />
<strong>of</strong> a blast furnace.<br />
floor or ,90/6 <strong>of</strong> a reverberatory. 2. The crucible<br />
Hearth-ends. Particles <strong>of</strong> unreduced lead ore expelled by the blast<br />
from a furnace.<br />
Heat. One operation in a heating furnace, Bessemer converter,<br />
puddling furnace, or other furnace not operating continuously.<br />
Heating-furnace. The furnace in which blooms or piles are<br />
heated before hammering or rolling.<br />
Heave, Corn. A horizontal dislocation <strong>of</strong> a vein or stratum.<br />
Helve. A lift-hammer for forging blooms.<br />
Henderson process. The treatment <strong>of</strong> copj)er sulphide ores by<br />
roasting witii salt, to form chlorides, which are then leached out <strong>and</strong><br />
precipitated. Henderson originally proposed to volatilize the chlo-<br />
rides, <strong>and</strong> the leaching <strong>and</strong> precipitation are not original with him.<br />
Longmaid <strong>and</strong> many other metallurgists have proposed them in<br />
various modifications.<br />
Hercules poivder. See Explosives.<br />
Hewer, Newc. The man who cuts the coal.<br />
Hitch, Scot, <strong>and</strong> Neavc. 1. A minor dislocation <strong>of</strong> a vein or<br />
stratum not exceeding in extent the thickness <strong>of</strong> the vein or stratum.<br />
2. A hole cut in the side-rock, when this is solid enough, to hold<br />
the cap <strong>of</strong> a set <strong>of</strong> timbers, permitting the leg to be dispensed with.<br />
High explosive. An explosive or detonating compound developing<br />
more intense <strong>and</strong> instantaneous force than gunpowder. Most high<br />
explosives in general use contain nitroglycerin. See Explosives.<br />
Hog-back. 1 . A sharp anticlinal, decreasing in height at both ends<br />
until it runs out. 2. A ridge produced by highly tilted strata.
