Rosdte copper. Disks <strong>of</strong> copper (red from the presence <strong>of</strong> sub-<br />

oxide) formed by cooling the surface <strong>of</strong> molten copper through<br />

sprinkling with Avater.<br />

JRossie furnace. An American variety <strong>of</strong> hearth for the treatment<br />

<strong>of</strong> galena, diflfcring from the Scotch hearth in using wood as fuel,<br />

working continuously, <strong>and</strong> having hollow walls, to heat the blast.<br />

Roughing rolls. The rolls <strong>of</strong> a train wliich first receive the pile,<br />

ingot, bloom, or billet, <strong>and</strong> partially form it into the final shape.<br />

Boughs, Corn. Coarse, poor s<strong>and</strong>s, resulting from tin-dressing.<br />

Bound coal. See Lump-coal.<br />

Rounder. See Beamer.<br />

Bow, Corn. Large, rough stones.<br />

Boyalty. The dues <strong>of</strong> the lessor or l<strong>and</strong>lord <strong>of</strong> a mine, or <strong>of</strong> the<br />

owner <strong>of</strong> a patented invention.<br />

Bozan process. An improvement <strong>of</strong> the Pattinson jirocess.<br />

Bubber. A gold-quartz amalgamator, in which the slime is rubbed<br />

against amalgamated copper surfaces.<br />

Bullers, Corn. The workmen who wheel ore in wheelbarrows<br />

underground.<br />

Bun, Corn. 1. The natural falling or closing together <strong>of</strong> under-<br />

ground workings. 2. Certain accidents to the winding apparatus.<br />

3. By the run. A method <strong>of</strong> paying coal miners per linear yard <strong>of</strong><br />

breast excavated, instead o( bythe wagon <strong>of</strong> clear coal produced. 4.<br />

A long deep-trougli in which slimes settle. 5. See Counter.<br />

Bunner. The channel through which molten metal is conducted<br />

from the blast furnace or cupola to the pig-bed, converter or moulds.<br />

See Pig-iron.<br />

Bun-out fire. A forge in which cast-iron is refined.<br />

Bun-steel. Malleable castings.<br />

Bush, Corn. See Sjjire.<br />

Busty. Applied to coals discolored by water or exposure, as well<br />

as to Cjuartz, etc., discolored by iron oxide.<br />

Busty gold, Pac. Free gold, which does not easily amalgamate,<br />

the particles being coated, as is supposed, with oxide <strong>of</strong> iron.<br />

Saddle. An anticlinal in a bed or flat vein.<br />

Safety-cage. A cage with a safety catch.<br />

Safety-car. See Barney.<br />

Safety-catch. An automatic device for preventing the fall <strong>of</strong> a<br />

cage in a shaft or a car in an incline, if the supporting cable breaks<br />

Safety-lamp. A lamp, the flame <strong>of</strong> which is so protected that it<br />
