Fast shot, Xewc. A charge <strong>of</strong> powder exploding without the de-<br />
sired eifect.<br />
Fathom, Corn. Six feet. A fathom <strong>of</strong> mininrj f/round is six feet<br />
square by the whole thickness <strong>of</strong> the vein, or in Cornish phrase, a<br />
fathom forward by a fathom vertical.<br />
Faidd. The tymp-arch or working-arch <strong>of</strong> a furnace.<br />
Fathom-tale, Corn. See Tut-icork (2). This name probably arisen<br />
from the payment for such work by the space excavated, <strong>and</strong> not by<br />
the ore produced.<br />
Fault. 1. A dislocation <strong>of</strong> the strata or the vein. 2. In coal-<br />
seams, sometimes applied to the coal rendered worthless by its condi-<br />
tion in the seam [slate-fault, dirt-fault, etc.).<br />
Feather. See Plug <strong>and</strong> feather.<br />
Feathered-shot. Copper granulated by pouring into cold water.<br />
Feathering. See Plugging.<br />
Feeder. 1. A small vein joining a larger vein. 2. A spring or<br />
stream. 3. A bloiccr <strong>of</strong> gas.<br />
Feigh, Newc. Refuse washed from lead-ore or coal.<br />
Feldspathic. Containing feldspar as a principal ingredient.<br />
Fell. See Riddle.<br />
Ferrie furnace. A high iron blast furnace, in the upper part <strong>of</strong><br />
which crude bituminous coal is converted into coke.<br />
Ferromanganese. An alloy <strong>of</strong> iron <strong>and</strong> manganese.<br />
Ferruginous. Containing iron.<br />
Fettle, Fettling. See Fix.<br />
Fillet. The rounded corner <strong>of</strong> a groove in a roll.<br />
Fin. The thin sheet <strong>of</strong> metal squeezed out between the collars <strong>of</strong><br />
the rolls in a roll-train.<br />
Fine metal. 1. See Metal. 2. The iron or plate-metal [jrodueed<br />
in the refinery.<br />
Finery. A charcoal-hearth for the conversion <strong>of</strong> cast into mal-<br />
leable iron.<br />
Fining. 1. See Refining. 2. The conversion <strong>of</strong> cast into mal-<br />
leable iron in a hearth or charcoal-fire.<br />
Finishing-rolls. The rolls <strong>of</strong> a train which receive the bar from<br />
the roughing-rolls, <strong>and</strong> reduce it to its finished shape.<br />
Fire-bars. Grate-bars in a fireplace.<br />
Fire-bricks. Refractory bricks <strong>of</strong> fire-clay or <strong>of</strong> silicious mate-<br />
rial used to line furnaces.<br />
Fire-bridge. The separating low wall between the fire-place <strong>and</strong><br />
the hearth <strong>of</strong> a/reverberatory furnace.
