Type genus: Proserpinella Bland, 1865
Remarks: Established as a substitute name
for Proserpinidae when Proserpina Sowerby,
1839, is considered to be invalid because
of Proserp/nus Hübner, 1816. However, Baker
did not treat Proserpina and Proserpinel-
la as synonyms, and they are currently not
considered to be confamilial. -inae, H. B.

Remarks: When Gray established Proserpinidae,
he cited as type genus "Proserpina
Gray, 1840", a name listed by Neave as distinct
from Proserpina Sowerby, 1839. However,
in 1840 (1840b: 125, 149), Gray used
Proserpina only as a name in a list, without
associated species and without a description,
and it is not an available name. Gray
(1847b: 182) treated "Odontostoma d'Orb.
1842" as a synonym and cited P. Unguífera
as an included species. This indicates that
Gray's Proserpina is the same as Sowerby's.
Proserpina Sowerby, 1839, is correctly cited
as the type genus of Proserpinidae by H.
B. Baker (in Moore, 1 960: 287). -inae, Thiele
(1929 [in 1929-1935]: 90). See also Despoenidae
