Remarks: In a review of a paperby Dall (1909),
Berry introduced Epitoniidae implicitly, but
not explicitly, as a replacement name for
Scalidae. Epitoniidae was again declared by
Dall (in Eastman, 1913: 538) to be a new
replacement name for Scalahidae, based on
Scalaria Lamarck, 1801 , by Dall considered
a synonym of Epitonium. Epitoniidae has
won general acceptance and is conserved
under Art. 40.2, with the precedence of the
replaced name. We here regard the replaced
name to be Scalariidae (1812) rather than
Scalidae (1853). -inae, Woodring (1928:
394); -oidea [as -acea], Salisbury (1 940: 88).
