medieval Italian literature is <strong>the</strong> recently published c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Daniela Boccassini, a<br />

book entitled I1 volo della mente. Falc<strong>on</strong>eria e sojia nel m<strong>on</strong>do mediterraneo: Islam,<br />

Federico 11, ante.^ Her main interest is in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>s as intellectual<br />

signs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sport <strong>of</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>ry as a quest for spiritual love or wisdom. In<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trast, this present work c<strong>on</strong>cerns primarily how <strong>the</strong> relati<strong>on</strong>ship, both real <strong>and</strong><br />

symbolic, between falc<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> nobility influences <strong>the</strong>ir use in <strong>the</strong> secular world <strong>of</strong> love<br />

poetry <strong>and</strong> tales <strong>of</strong> society.<br />

This dissertati<strong>on</strong> looks at <strong>the</strong> reas<strong>on</strong>s for which <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ways in which images <strong>of</strong><br />

falc<strong>on</strong>s, hawks, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sport <strong>of</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>ry are used in medieval Italian literature. It seeks to<br />

show that <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se images changes in Italy over <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thirteenth <strong>and</strong><br />

fourteenth centuries. The courtly love symbolism that <strong>the</strong> falc<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> its kind evoke in<br />

French, Provengal, <strong>and</strong> English literatures becomes problematic in Italy because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

evoluti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> its poetry away from <strong>the</strong> courtly love ideal, <strong>and</strong> because <strong>of</strong> socio-cultural<br />

changes involving <strong>the</strong> rise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> merchant class in Italy <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old aristocratic<br />

way <strong>of</strong> life that was idealized in earlier love poetry.<br />

References to falc<strong>on</strong>ry <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> birds involved are in fact much less comm<strong>on</strong> in<br />

Italian than in o<strong>the</strong>r vernacular literatures. The courtly c<strong>on</strong>notati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> birds <strong>of</strong> prey are<br />

less relevant to Italian society than to <strong>the</strong> still feudal systems <strong>of</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Europe. In <strong>the</strong><br />

Duecento <strong>and</strong> Trecento <strong>and</strong> bey<strong>on</strong>d, Italian society is very dynamic. The rise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

merchant class steals <strong>the</strong> exclusivity <strong>of</strong> leisure time <strong>and</strong> its pursuits such as falc<strong>on</strong>ry from<br />

<strong>the</strong> crumbling aristocracy. The associati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>ry with knighthood <strong>and</strong> courtly love,<br />

by now a c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>alized c<strong>on</strong>struct, is simply not very relevant to <strong>the</strong> new society.<br />
