menti<strong>on</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> Cantari d'A~~ram<strong>on</strong>te,~ in <strong>the</strong> same sorts <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>texts, as well as being a<br />
measure <strong>of</strong> wealth <strong>and</strong> nobility.<br />
Although hunting is practiced in reality with many kinds <strong>of</strong> hawks <strong>and</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>s,<br />
<strong>on</strong>ly a few are comm<strong>on</strong>ly encountered in medieval Italian literature. The most frequent<br />
references are to hawks: <strong>the</strong> spawiero, or sparrowhawk, is <strong>the</strong> most comm<strong>on</strong>; it seems to<br />
be <strong>the</strong> default bird in representing love or nobility in Old French, Provenqal, <strong>and</strong> Italian<br />
literature. The astore, or goshawk, is <strong>of</strong>ten seen as well; it is a larger <strong>and</strong> more fearsome<br />
hawk than <strong>the</strong> sparrowhawk. Am<strong>on</strong>g falc<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> generic falco or falc<strong>on</strong>e is <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
menti<strong>on</strong>ed, al<strong>on</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> falc<strong>on</strong> pellegrino, or peregrine falc<strong>on</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> girfalco, or<br />
gyrfalc<strong>on</strong>, whose relati<strong>on</strong>ship to <strong>the</strong> generic falc<strong>on</strong> corresp<strong>on</strong>ds to that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> goshawk<br />
with <strong>the</strong> sparrowhawk. Occasi<strong>on</strong>ally c<strong>on</strong>trasting with <strong>the</strong> above birds is <strong>the</strong> nibbio, or<br />
kite, a type <strong>of</strong> falc<strong>on</strong> that is small, <strong>and</strong> was c<strong>on</strong>sidered lazy, cowardly, <strong>and</strong> an ineffective<br />
hunter. The choice <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se birds over ano<strong>the</strong>r in poetry seems usually arbitrary,<br />
with a few excepti<strong>on</strong>s. The kite, <strong>of</strong> course, is used in a negative c<strong>on</strong>text. If <strong>the</strong> poet<br />
wishes to c<strong>on</strong>vey a sense <strong>of</strong> diving <strong>and</strong> striking swiftly from a great height, <strong>the</strong> natural<br />
choice is a falc<strong>on</strong>, which hunts in that manner, ra<strong>the</strong>r than a hawk. Likewise, if a poem is<br />
set in a forest, a hawk, which hunts low to <strong>the</strong> ground in brushy areas, <strong>and</strong> grasps its prey<br />
firmly in its tal<strong>on</strong>s, is more appropriate. Let us now examine <strong>the</strong>se uses <strong>of</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />
hawks.<br />
Despite <strong>the</strong> str<strong>on</strong>g ties between <strong>the</strong> south <strong>of</strong> France <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> court <strong>of</strong> Frederick 11,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> emperor's obsessi<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> sport <strong>of</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>ry, falc<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> hawks are practically<br />
