leisure time, nobility. After examining Folgore's use <strong>of</strong> this pastime, it will be interesting<br />

to note its similarity, if not its point <strong>of</strong> view, with a much earlier c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

trappings <strong>of</strong> wealth, written by Ugucci<strong>on</strong>e da Lodi.<br />

The cor<strong>on</strong>a dei mesi hearkens back to <strong>the</strong> traditi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Provenqal plazer, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

aimed at a brigata, whose descripti<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> introductory s<strong>on</strong>net paints <strong>the</strong>m as typical<br />

carefree young wealthy folk. The cor<strong>on</strong>a della settimana describes <strong>the</strong> life <strong>and</strong> pastimes<br />

<strong>of</strong> a young man <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nobility. Both sets <strong>of</strong> poems <strong>of</strong>fer a survey <strong>of</strong> medieval<br />

recreati<strong>on</strong>al pastimes for <strong>the</strong> nobility, <strong>and</strong> encourage liberality with m<strong>on</strong>ey.<br />

The hunting birds that Folgore lists are those seen comm<strong>on</strong>ly elsewhere in literary<br />

references, <strong>and</strong> evokes <strong>the</strong> hunting scene by menti<strong>on</strong>ing accoutrements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sport-<br />

leashes, jesses. He emphasizes <strong>the</strong> joy to be found in all types <strong>of</strong> hunting birds, "mudati,"<br />

caught after <strong>the</strong>ir first moult, or "nidaci," raised in captivity. Associated with <strong>the</strong> courtly<br />
