CHAPTER 1 : Falc<strong>on</strong>ry as symbols before (<strong>and</strong> outside <strong>of</strong>) Italian literature.<br />
Although keeping tamed hawks for recreati<strong>on</strong>al hunting is a practice that goes<br />
back thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> years in <strong>the</strong> Middle East <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> steppes <strong>of</strong> Eastern Europe, <strong>and</strong><br />
although falc<strong>on</strong>ry was practiced for food hunting <strong>on</strong> occasi<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Greco-Roman world,<br />
it truly finds its niche as a typical pastime <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nobility <strong>of</strong> Western Europe under <strong>the</strong><br />
c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> feudal system. The feudal nobility have capital, leisure time, <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong><br />
in abundance-exactly <strong>the</strong> qualities needed for recreati<strong>on</strong>al hunting. In additi<strong>on</strong>, during<br />
<strong>the</strong> Crusades, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tact <strong>of</strong> Western nobility with <strong>the</strong> Islamic world brings <strong>the</strong> expertise,<br />
practices, <strong>and</strong> treatises <strong>of</strong> Arab falc<strong>on</strong>ers to Europe. The westerners, who enthusiastically<br />
embrace this hobby, write many treatises <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own, culminating in <strong>the</strong> De Arte<br />
Ven<strong>and</strong>i cum Avibus written by Emperor Frederick 11.<br />
The growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> special role that falc<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> hawks have in society can be seen<br />
in <strong>the</strong>ir increasing inclusi<strong>on</strong> in types <strong>of</strong> texts whose earlier incarnati<strong>on</strong>s omitted <strong>the</strong>m or<br />
had merely cursory comments. Such is <strong>the</strong> case with bestiaries <strong>and</strong> encyclopedic<br />
literature, whose secti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> hawks grow <strong>and</strong> multiply with <strong>the</strong> parallel<br />
growth <strong>of</strong> popularity in <strong>the</strong> sport <strong>and</strong> its accompanying how-to treatises.<br />
Because <strong>of</strong> this close relati<strong>on</strong>ship between people <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir domesticated birds,<br />
<strong>and</strong> because people admire <strong>the</strong>m as fierce predators in <strong>the</strong> wild, <strong>the</strong>y receive a unique<br />
treatment in art <strong>and</strong> literature as well. In art <strong>the</strong>y are ubiquitous; a hunting party sets <strong>of</strong>f<br />

man with a hawk is <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Campanile <strong>of</strong> Florence as <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seven mechanical arts;<br />
