century, is not spiritual, but a voluminous encyclopedic work intended as a commentary<br />

<strong>on</strong> Aristotle's books about animals. Books 22-26 <strong>of</strong> his text, however, are written in <strong>the</strong><br />

naturalist vein, providing descripti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> many different animals from various sources<br />

<strong>and</strong> also his own observati<strong>on</strong>s. Book 23 in this series is devoted to birds, <strong>and</strong> a solid half<br />

<strong>of</strong> this text is reserved for discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> hawks <strong>and</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>s, from both a naturalist's <strong>and</strong> a<br />

falc<strong>on</strong>er's point <strong>of</strong> view. Al<strong>on</strong>g with dividing <strong>the</strong> birds <strong>of</strong> prey into species, he discusses<br />

in depth <strong>the</strong> birds' appearance, habits, colorati<strong>on</strong>, bird-calls, classificati<strong>on</strong>, care <strong>and</strong><br />

training, <strong>the</strong>ir preferred geographical area, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir relative usefulness for hunting. He<br />

also gives veterinary advice. His sources are his own pers<strong>on</strong>al experience, al<strong>on</strong>g with<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> he has received from c<strong>on</strong>sulting falc<strong>on</strong>ers, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> authoritative texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

time: an apocryphal letter from Aquila, Symmachus, <strong>and</strong> Theodothy<strong>on</strong> to Ptolemy, king<br />

<strong>of</strong> Egypt, <strong>and</strong> treatises by Guillelmus falc<strong>on</strong>arius <strong>and</strong> Gerardus falc<strong>on</strong>arius. He also uses<br />

material from his c<strong>on</strong>temporary, Frederick 11.~' In total, Albertus Magnus is practical,<br />

thorough, <strong>and</strong> knowledgeable, <strong>and</strong> he clearly appreciates <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>ry to<br />

<strong>the</strong> culture <strong>of</strong> his time.<br />

Falc<strong>on</strong>ry treatises are integral parts <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r encyclopedic works as well, in <strong>the</strong><br />

thirteenth century. In additi<strong>on</strong> to that <strong>of</strong> Bartholomaeus Anglicus, Brunetto Latini's<br />

Tresor has a secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> falc<strong>on</strong>ry, by far <strong>the</strong> most extensive descripti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> rapacious birds<br />

that is to be found in an encyclopedic text in <strong>the</strong> French or Italian vernacular. The<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> that he provides about <strong>the</strong> birds emphasizes <strong>the</strong> perspective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

usefulness in hunting, as is shown by his first statement: "Ostours est uns oiseaus de<br />

proie, si come s<strong>on</strong>t fauc<strong>on</strong>s et esperviers et autres oiseaus que l'en tient par delit a penre<br />
