It is a hunt in which psychological intimidati<strong>on</strong> causes physical surrender, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

predator <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> prey cross a line over which <strong>the</strong>ir behavior is closer to <strong>the</strong>ir human<br />

models than to <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> a hunt.<br />

In a culture which <strong>of</strong>ten uses birds to represent lovers in literature, <strong>the</strong> noblest<br />

lovers will usually be represented by birds <strong>of</strong> prey. We have seen this in Provengal<br />

poetry; it is true in o<strong>the</strong>r genres as well, such as dream visi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> short stories. The idea<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hierarchy <strong>of</strong> birds associated with love am<strong>on</strong>g different social classes is used more .<br />

straightforwardly in feudal countries than in Italy, where <strong>the</strong> increasingly bourgeois<br />

society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourteenth century prompts a different view <strong>of</strong> status <strong>and</strong> birds <strong>of</strong> prey.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cept <strong>of</strong> representing human lovers by falc<strong>on</strong>s or hawks in love is<br />

comm<strong>on</strong> to Italian literature as well. It is <strong>of</strong> interest to note how birds <strong>of</strong> prey are treated<br />

in c<strong>on</strong>temporary fourteenth-century literature outside Italy.<br />

visi<strong>on</strong>s is illuminating. This poetic genre, in which birds ga<strong>the</strong>r to discuss love or to pair<br />

<strong>of</strong>f, <strong>of</strong>ten centers <strong>on</strong> a noble lover who is having problems with his choice <strong>of</strong> mate; <strong>the</strong><br />

roles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se protag<strong>on</strong>ists are played by eagles, falc<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> hawks.<br />

A French dream visi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> this type is <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>ge Saint Valentin by Ot<strong>on</strong> de<br />

Grans<strong>on</strong>, a c<strong>on</strong>temporary <strong>of</strong> Chaucer, in which birds ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong> Valentine's Day to choose<br />

mates. Although <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> this work clearly has much in comm<strong>on</strong> with Chaucer's<br />

Parlement <strong>of</strong> Foules, its central dilemma is a bit different. Here <strong>the</strong> problem in <strong>the</strong><br />

ga<strong>the</strong>ring <strong>of</strong> birds c<strong>on</strong>cerns a tercel peregrine falc<strong>on</strong>, representing <strong>the</strong> poet-lover, who has
