The Novellino boasts <strong>on</strong>e more novella, number LXIIII," in which a hawk is<br />

involved. Entitled, D'una Novella k'avenne in Provenza alla Corte del Po, it is a novella<br />

with c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s to Provengal poetry. The main plot tells <strong>of</strong> a knight, Messer Alamanno,<br />

at <strong>the</strong> court <strong>of</strong> Puy, who is tricked into boasting about his lady, Mad<strong>on</strong>na Grigia.<br />

Angered, she dismisses him, <strong>and</strong> he, grief-stricken, becomes a hermit. Some squires<br />

encounter him later, not recognizing him, <strong>and</strong> bemoan <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> this "fior de' cavalieri."<br />

They tell <strong>the</strong> hermit that a tournament will so<strong>on</strong> be held, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y hope that <strong>the</strong><br />

absent knight will return. Messer Alamanno secretly arranges to attend. At <strong>the</strong><br />

tournament, he is recognized, <strong>and</strong> asked to sing. He resp<strong>on</strong>ds, "10 n<strong>on</strong> canteroe mai se io<br />

n<strong>on</strong> o pacie da mia Dama." She agrees to forgive him, but <strong>on</strong>ly if "ciento Bar<strong>on</strong>i<br />

. . . ciento Dame et. . . ciento D<strong>on</strong>zelle.. .tutti gridino a una bocie mercie, e n<strong>on</strong> sappiano a<br />

cui lassi chiedere."' He answers <strong>the</strong> challenge by composing verse for <strong>the</strong> "festa della<br />

c<strong>and</strong>ellara" (C<strong>and</strong>lemas) <strong>and</strong> recites his new poem in church. Up<strong>on</strong> hearing it, every<strong>on</strong>e<br />

in <strong>the</strong> church cries out for mercy, <strong>and</strong> Messer Alamanno is forgiven. The text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

poem, which is an incomplete renditi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> a canso by Rigault de Berbezilh, is as<br />
