P i l e u s 4-8 cm, eonvex, with flat to slightly depressed centre<br />

at first, glittering, firm, whitish, then light alutaeeous ("Cartridge<br />

Buff"), oehraeeous or with sulphurous spots when touched, and<br />

often with a thin, adnate membrane derived from the universal veil<br />

on the dise. Margin more or less elosely involute for a longer or<br />

shorter period, with thiekened and outwardly striate edge. G i Il s<br />

free, very erowded, narrow, light flesh eolour ("PaIe Cinnamon<br />

Pink"), at length blaekish brown with sterile, pale edge, S t e m<br />

4-6 cm X 20-35 mm, eylindrical or slightly swollen towards the<br />

base whieh is often somewhat pointed, rooting, solid, with the<br />

same eolour as the eap, smooth. R i n g double: (l) a broader, and<br />

thieker upper ring whieh is peronate, rigid and spreading, often<br />

striate on the upper side, naked and unstriped on the underside,<br />

and (2) a quite narrow and thin, sheating, erect, lower ring. Flesh<br />

firm and dense both in the cap and the stem, white, very slightly<br />

wine red ("PaIe Vinaceous Fawn") when broken. S m e Il acidulous<br />

or, when the pellicle has beeome yellow by bruising, almond-like.<br />

S c h li f f e r r e a c t i o n negative, very rarely slightly positive.<br />

Spore powder brownish black ("Bone Brown"; L. c3; S. 117).<br />

Spores roundish, 1-2 guttulate, 5-6.25{-7) X 4-5{-6)p.<br />

B a s i d i a 4-spored, (22-)28-40 X 6-9(-12) p. S t e r i g m a t a<br />

2.5-3 p long. C y s t i d i a on edge numerous, broadly clavate,<br />

hyaline or slightly brownish, 11-40 X 5-16 p.
