At right angles to the hypha the primordium of the falx grows<br />

out to its full length, to begin with as a long, almost cylindrical<br />

cello Soon the primordium of the prophialide appears as a swollen<br />

part of the cell, and above this swollen part the primordium of the<br />

narrow apical filament is to be seen (Fig. 1 c). Thus, this appar­<br />

ently not important apical cell is formed very early in the develop­<br />

ment of the falx (is it a rudimentary organ ?). The basal wall of the<br />

prophialide is the first septum formed. After this first septation the<br />

phialides (Fig. 1 d and e) are formed and about at the same time<br />
