Description. Pileus 6-10 cm, semiglobate at first, then<br />

expanded, sometimes with flattened centre, fairly firm, whitish,<br />

sometimes cracking when dry, covered at first with numerous squa­<br />

mules, pale or brownish towards the edge ("Wood Brown") densest<br />

towards the edge. Pellicle not easily separable. G i Il s free, crowded,<br />

narrow, when unfolding light flesh colour ("PaIe Pinkish Buff"),<br />

at length blackish brown. Edge sterile, whitish. S t e m short and<br />

comparatively thick, 6-8 cm X 20-35 mm , cylindrical or gradually<br />

thieker towards base, solid with 2 mm broad, firm pith, white but<br />

often a beautiful rose colour above the ring, firm, squamulose like<br />

the cap in the lower half (universal veil), smooth above the ring.<br />

R i n g sheathed above, white but at length becoming dark, rather<br />

thick, most frequently narrow, double, with coarse, white teeth soen<br />

turning brown along the periphery on the underside. F l e s h com­<br />

pact, thick, rather thin at the edge of the cap, white, bright wine<br />

colour when cut ("Purplish Vinaceous") in the upper outer part<br />

of the stem and in spots in the capo S m e Il acidulous, sometimes<br />

fruit-like. S c h af f e r r e a c t i o n negative. S p o r e p o w d e r dark<br />

brown ("Mummy Brown"; L. g8; S. 701).
