of P. siloatico. sensu Fr. and that P. sanguinaria is probably<br />

identica1. E i n a r I n g e l s t r om (Svampbok, p. 104, 1940) maintains<br />

that P. silvatica comprises a number of more or less rubescent<br />

species, and he does not mention P . sanguinaria. It is especiaIly un ­<br />

der the influence of t he Swedish view, which coincides with the<br />

German view (R i c k e n, J u 1. S c h li.f f e r) that the author employs<br />

the name P . silvatic a.<br />

The species is very va riable, particularly in colour, but the microscopical<br />

characters are constant. The folIowing varieties may be<br />

met with :<br />

9a. P. silvatiea ( SCHAEFF.) FR. var. pallida var . n.<br />

leon.: S c h u l z: Michael, Ftihre r f. Pilzfreunde, no . 54, 1924.<br />

A typo differt pileo albido, squamulis dispersis, angustioribus,<br />

ochraceis. Annulus infr a albus.<br />

In silvis abiegnis, gregaria. Dania.<br />

p i l e u s whitish or pale ("Tilleul Buff") with delicate, sparse,<br />

yellowish (p ale "Drab") squamules. S t e m whitish. R i n g: Underside<br />

white. Otherwise as type.<br />

Gregarious in Picea woods. September-October.<br />

Falster: Halderup Skov. - Fyn : Bøllevænge near Nyborg.<br />

Lolland: Grænge Skov.<br />

9 b. P. silvatiea (SCHAE FF.) FR. var. saturata var. n.<br />

A typo differt pileo truncato-convexo, rufo, squamis fibrillisque<br />

densis, fere concoloribus praedito, annulo infra rufo-squamuloso. In<br />

silvis abiegnis, gregaria. Dania.<br />

Differs from the type in the folIowing characters : P i l e u s<br />

obtusely convex, reddish brown ("Cinnamon-Brown") with nearly<br />

concolorous ("Verona Brown") dense scales and fibrils, often also<br />

with loose, pale remnants of t he universal veil . Underside of r i n g<br />

reddish brown squamulose. Gregarious in Picea woods. September­<br />

October.<br />

Falster: Halderup Skov. - Lolland: Fuglsang Storskov.<br />

This rather large variety (cap 6-9 cm broad) is nearly allied to<br />
