P i l e u s 8-12 cm, convex, often with flattened centre, shining,<br />

lighter and more reddish than in P. vapororui, spotted with dark<br />

brown ("Natal Brown"), rather broad, adpressed fibrillose scales<br />

which, however, may be lacking in the centre, on a light reddish<br />

brown ("Vinaceous-Buff") ground. Along the margin there is a<br />

light velum zone, 1-2mm wide. G i Il s as in the preceding species<br />

bu t at first more rose-coloured ("Light Congo Pink"). S t e m often<br />

short, 6-8 cm X 20-30 mm, cylindrical, solid, sometimes hollow,<br />

whitish, turning tawny when touched, gradually turning grey. Covering<br />

of stem and characters of ring as in P. vaporaria. F l e s h<br />

thick, whitish, but immediately turning dull pinkish flesh colour<br />

("Brownish Vinaceous") when broken, especiaIly in the stem.<br />

S m e Il pleasant, fruity, then after gathering sweetish and somewhat<br />

disagreeable (like licorice or chicory) . S c h ti. f f e r r e a c t i o n<br />

negative. S p o r e p o w d e r dark brown ("Mummy Brown" ; L. g 8 ;<br />

S. 701).<br />

Spores roundish ovate, mostly 1-2(-3)-guttulate, 5-7 X<br />

4-5(-5.5) u . Basidia 4-spored, clavate, 26-34 X 7-10/-l.<br />

S t e r i g m a t a 3/-l long. C y s t i d i a on edge tufted, clavate, sometimes<br />

divided into cells, hyaline or brown, 32-60 X 9-13 u , easily<br />

separable from the hymenium, edge sterile.<br />

Has the same growth and occurs in the same localities as P. vaporarui,<br />

but is probably rarer. May-August.<br />

Falster: Nykøbing in an area; Ourupgaard on roadside; western<br />

side of Virket Sø in an arbour (G. Dybkj ær). - Fyn: Pederstrup<br />

(J ak. E. Lang e).<br />

P. subperonata is nearly allied to P. vaporarui, but differs from<br />

it in the pinkish red of the flesh, the well developed cystidia on the<br />

edge, and the less round form of the spores.
