Malaafaiy is a significant d<strong>in</strong>ner experience reserved for very special occasions usually<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered to dignitaries and honoured guests. Malaafaiy (Figure 6.19) is the name given to<br />

a large, lidded, round wooden tray decorated with traditional lacquer work <strong>in</strong> which a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> local dishes are arranged. Because <strong>of</strong> the traditional style <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

present<strong>in</strong>g Malaafaiy, it would make an enrich<strong>in</strong>g food experience that could be<br />

provided for tourists <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>habited islands. <strong>The</strong>se meals were also identified by survey<br />

respondents as hav<strong>in</strong>g great potential to be part <strong>of</strong> broader tourist cultural experiences.<br />
