At <strong>the</strong> commencement exercises of <strong>the</strong> Western<br />

Reserve College, July 12, 1854, Mr. <strong>Douglass</strong><br />

ably discussed <strong>the</strong> question, " The Claims of <strong>the</strong><br />

Negro Ethnologically Considered." As stated<br />

elsewhere in this sketch, up to this time he had<br />

delivered his speeches extemporaneously or from<br />

brief notes. On this occasion he wrote out in<br />

full his address and spoke from manuscript, introducing<br />

his subject to <strong>the</strong> audience in <strong>the</strong>se<br />

words:—<br />

"Gentlemen of <strong>the</strong> Philozetian Society: I propose<br />

to submit to you a few thoughts on <strong>the</strong><br />

subject of <strong>the</strong> Claims of <strong>the</strong> Negro, suggested by<br />

ethnological science, or <strong>the</strong> natural history of<br />

man. But, before entering upon that subject, I<br />

y trust you will allow me to make a remark or two<br />

somewhat personal to myself. The relation between<br />

me and this occasion may justify what, in<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs, might seem an offense against good taste.<br />

" This occasion is to me of no ordinary interest,<br />

for many reasons; and <strong>the</strong> honor you have done<br />

me, in selecting me as your speaker, is as grateful<br />

to my heart as it is noVel in <strong>the</strong> history of<br />

American collegiate or literary institutions. Surprised<br />

as I am, <strong>the</strong> public are no less surprised,<br />

at <strong>the</strong> spirit of independence, and <strong>the</strong> moral
