instrumental in securing <strong>the</strong> first appointment of<br />

colored teachers in <strong>the</strong> county schools, and it<br />

was largely through his efforts that <strong>the</strong> equalization<br />

in <strong>the</strong> pay of colored teachers and <strong>the</strong><br />

whites was accomplished.<br />

<strong>Frederick</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong> has followed with loving<br />

solicitude <strong>the</strong> career of his children, and has<br />

done all in his power to advance <strong>the</strong>ir interests<br />

and promote <strong>the</strong>ir happiness. Now in his advanced<br />

age he has reason to be satisfied with <strong>the</strong><br />

success which has attended <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> winter of 1884 Mr. <strong>Douglass</strong> married<br />

an Anglo-Saxon lady, Miss Helen Pitts of western<br />

New York. She is a lady of refinement and<br />

education, and possessed of pleasing manners.<br />

Mr. <strong>Douglass</strong>* married life is one of enjoyment<br />

and happiness. He and Mrs. <strong>Douglass</strong> frequently<br />

entertain friends from <strong>the</strong> city, on which<br />

occasions she presides with grace and dignity.
