Prof. J. W- Cromwell now read a number of<br />

letters from prominent persons, expressing <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

sorrow caused by <strong>the</strong> death of <strong>the</strong> great man, and<br />

regretting <strong>the</strong>ir inability to attend <strong>the</strong> funeral.<br />

The Rev. Anna Shaw <strong>the</strong>n offered a fervent<br />

prayer.<br />

The services were closed with <strong>the</strong> benediction<br />

by Bishop R. S. Williams of <strong>the</strong> C. M. E. Church<br />

of America.<br />

At 5.30 o'clock <strong>the</strong> casket containing <strong>the</strong><br />

remains was borne by <strong>the</strong> pallbearers from <strong>the</strong><br />

church to <strong>the</strong> hearse. The military escort, consisting<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Capital City Guards and a<br />

detachment of one hundred and fifty men of <strong>the</strong><br />

colored camps of <strong>the</strong> Grand Army of <strong>the</strong> Republic,<br />

quickly formed into line, and <strong>the</strong> procession<br />

moved slowly to <strong>the</strong> depot. Arriving <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong><br />

body was placed under military guard until <strong>the</strong><br />

hour of 7.20, when it was carried over <strong>the</strong> Pennsylvania<br />

railroad to Rochester, New York, for<br />

interment.
