CHAPTER XV<br />

OBSEQUIES AT ROCHESTER, N. Y<br />

TUESDAY, February 26, <strong>the</strong> day on which <strong>the</strong><br />

body of <strong>Frederick</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong> was laid at rest in<br />

Mt. Hope cemetery, will ever remain a memorable<br />

one in <strong>the</strong> history of Rochester. On this<br />

day <strong>the</strong> city was in mourning and showed its<br />

respect for <strong>the</strong> man who was for so many years<br />

its distinguished resident. On <strong>the</strong> public buildings<br />

and on many business blocks <strong>the</strong> national<br />

colors floated at half-mast.<br />

There were assembled at <strong>the</strong> depot, awaiting<br />

<strong>the</strong> arrival of <strong>the</strong> funeral train from Washington,<br />

<strong>the</strong> city officials,—Mayor Lewis, Aldermen Ashton,<br />

Cook, Green, McMillan, Dewey, Harris,<br />

Kelly, Tracy, Calihan, Rauber, Fox, Ward,<br />

Pauckner, Aikenhead, Simmelink, and Decker;<br />

<strong>the</strong> honorary and active pallbearers; <strong>the</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong><br />

League, and a countless multitude of people,<br />

including many persons who had known Mr.<br />

<strong>Douglass</strong> during his residence in Rochester.<br />

The train bearing <strong>the</strong> body entered <strong>the</strong> central<br />

station of <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Central railroad at 9.25<br />

o'clock A. M. Those accompanying <strong>the</strong> remains<br />

from Washington were <strong>the</strong> immediate members<br />

of <strong>the</strong> family and several friends. Included in
