lovely and pleasant in <strong>the</strong>ir lives, and in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

death <strong>the</strong>y were not divided; <strong>the</strong>y were swifter<br />

than eagles, <strong>the</strong>y were stronger than lions. * *<br />

" How are <strong>the</strong> mighty fallen in <strong>the</strong> midst of<br />

<strong>the</strong> battle! Jonathan is slain upon thy high<br />

places. I am distressed for <strong>the</strong>e, my bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me:<br />

thy love to me was wonderful, passing <strong>the</strong> love<br />

of women. How are <strong>the</strong> mighty fallen, and <strong>the</strong><br />

weapons of war perished! " The sorrow, <strong>the</strong><br />

deep, <strong>the</strong> almost inexpressible sorrow, which this<br />

man felt for his dead friend, do we feel for this<br />

great man, who has now passed beyond our ken,<br />

" into <strong>the</strong> silent land, into <strong>the</strong> land of <strong>the</strong> great<br />

departed."<br />

Our purpose this morning, however, is not to<br />

use this occasion to pour out our lamentations,<br />

but ra<strong>the</strong>r to look back over that remarkable<br />

career, covering a period of nearly eight decades,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> view of forming some estimate of <strong>the</strong><br />

man, of <strong>the</strong> debt we owe him, and of getting from<br />

his life courage and inspiration for <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

I. AS TO THE MAN.<br />

By nature he was cast in a great mold,—<br />

physically, intellectually, and morally. Physically,<br />

what a splendid specimen of a man he was,—tall,<br />

erect, massive, and yet moving with <strong>the</strong> grace<br />

and agility of an Apollo. How Phidias or<br />
