tongue, and make him a power in <strong>the</strong> stirring and<br />

eventful period in which Thou didst cast his lot;<br />

only Thou couldst teach us <strong>the</strong> lesson of his life<br />

and through it fit us <strong>the</strong> better to serve Thee<br />

and our fellow men.<br />

" We <strong>the</strong>refore entreat Thee for <strong>the</strong> influence<br />

of Thy Holy Spirit upon our spirits that we may<br />

see Thee and recognize <strong>the</strong> solemn realities, <strong>the</strong><br />

noble opportunities and <strong>the</strong> unescapable responsibilities<br />

of our life. Forgive and cleanse us.<br />

Set us free from every form of bondage; teach<br />

us, lead us, help us, inspire us, and save us<br />

through Him who hath taught us to pray, saying,<br />

* Our Fa<strong>the</strong>r which art in heaven.' "<br />

Then <strong>the</strong> Rev. Dr. W- A. Ely, pastor of <strong>the</strong><br />

Zion A. M. E. Church, read scriptural passages<br />

appropriate to <strong>the</strong> occasion.<br />

MR. RICHARDSON'S TRIBUTE OF RESPECT.<br />

Mr. Sherman D. Richardson <strong>the</strong>n read <strong>the</strong><br />

following original poem : —<br />

DOUGLASS.<br />

I saw <strong>the</strong> slave of Maryland<br />

Upon <strong>the</strong> soil of freedom stand.<br />

The waves that once <strong>the</strong> Mayflower bore<br />

Were dashing on New England's shore.<br />

The Stars and Stripes showed Nor<strong>the</strong>rn will<br />

On breezes from old Bunker Hill;<br />

And as he drank in liberty<br />

I saw <strong>the</strong> man from serfdom free.
