Port Hudson, Louisiana, June, 1863, is descriptive,<br />

as well, of <strong>the</strong> action of that body of brave<br />

men who made <strong>the</strong> attack upon Wagner.<br />

"' Freedom!' <strong>the</strong>ir battle cry—<br />

' Freedom! or leave to die!'<br />

Ah! and <strong>the</strong>y meant <strong>the</strong> word,<br />

Not as with us 'tis heard,<br />

Not a mere party shout;<br />

They gave <strong>the</strong>ir spirits out;<br />

Trusted <strong>the</strong> end to God<br />

And on <strong>the</strong> gory sod<br />

Rolled in triumphant blood."<br />

In Syracuse, N. Y., October 7, 1869, Mr. Lewis<br />

H. <strong>Douglass</strong> was married to Miss Helen Amelia<br />

Loguen, daughter of Bishop J. W Loguen of <strong>the</strong><br />

A. M. E. Zion Church.<br />

For two years by appointment of President<br />

Grant, Mr. <strong>Douglass</strong> was a member of <strong>the</strong> council<br />

of <strong>the</strong> legislature of <strong>the</strong> District of Columbia,<br />

and for two years he was a special agent of <strong>the</strong><br />

post office department. During <strong>the</strong> administration<br />

of President Hayes, he held <strong>the</strong> office of<br />

assistant marshal of <strong>the</strong> District of Columbia for<br />

<strong>the</strong> United States. For several years he has<br />

conducted a real estate office at 934 F street,<br />

Washington, and is regarded as one of <strong>the</strong> most<br />

successful business men of <strong>the</strong> race at <strong>the</strong> national<br />

capital.<br />

Charles Remond <strong>Douglass</strong> was born in Lynn,
