dictation. For a time she studied at Oberlin,<br />

Ohio, and subsequently taught school at Salem,<br />

New'Jersey.<br />

Miss Rosetta was married to Mr. Nathan<br />

Sprague in Rochester, December 24, 1863. Mr.<br />

Sprague is engaged in <strong>the</strong> real estate business,<br />

and resides with his family in a beautiful home<br />

at Takoma Park in <strong>the</strong> suburbs of Washington.<br />

Lewis H. <strong>Douglass</strong>, <strong>the</strong> eldest son, was born<br />

in New Bedford, Mass., October 9, 1840. He<br />

was_ eight years old when <strong>the</strong> family removed to<br />

Rochester. His education was obtained in <strong>the</strong><br />

schools of that city. He rendered valuable assistance<br />

in <strong>the</strong> publication of <strong>the</strong> newspaper conducted<br />

by his fa<strong>the</strong>r. Enlisting in <strong>the</strong> 54th<br />

Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in <strong>the</strong> spring<br />

of 1863, he continued with that regiment till<br />

1864, when he was discharged for disability incurred<br />

in <strong>the</strong> line of duty. He held <strong>the</strong> important<br />

position of sergeant-major of his regiment,<br />

being appointed to that rank immediately upon<br />

his enlistment. He took part in <strong>the</strong> engagement<br />

on James Island, July 10, 1863; was in <strong>the</strong> assault<br />

on Fort Wagner, July 18, 1863, and in <strong>the</strong> six<br />

weeks' siege following <strong>the</strong> famous storming of<br />

that fort, under which his health broke down, making<br />

his discharge necessary.<br />
