prominent citizens. The pupils of <strong>the</strong> public<br />

schools, accompanied by <strong>the</strong>ir teachers, were given<br />

an opportunity to view <strong>the</strong> remains, special<br />

arrangements having been made for <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The guard of honor at <strong>the</strong> hall consisted of<br />

Corporal Ray Crane, and Privates John Bricker,<br />

A. Birdsell, J. W Sherman, and B. R. Ordway,<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Eighth Separate Company of <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Guard; Lieutenant Schwartz, and patrolmen<br />

Kron, Moore, Maguire, Johnson, Moran, Mc-<br />

Alester, Mullane, Shephard, Scholl, Klein, Sheehan,<br />

and Sullivan, of <strong>the</strong> Police Department.<br />

The funeral cortege, leaving <strong>the</strong> City Hall at<br />

2 o'clock, marched slowly to <strong>the</strong> Central Church.<br />

The Fifty-fourth Regiment band, playing <strong>the</strong><br />

funeral march, led <strong>the</strong> procession. Then came<br />

<strong>the</strong> Eighth Separate Company, under command<br />

of Captain H. B. Henderson, followed by a platoon<br />

of forty-eight policemen in charge of Captain<br />

McDermott. The next in line were <strong>the</strong> active<br />

and honorary pallbearers in carriages, Mayor,<br />

and members of <strong>the</strong> Common Council, and exmayors.<br />

After <strong>the</strong>se followed <strong>the</strong> hearse, drawn<br />

by four white horses, richly caparisoned. Members<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong> League acted as an escort<br />

to <strong>the</strong> hearse.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> cortege had reached <strong>the</strong> church <strong>the</strong><br />

casket was carried to <strong>the</strong> front of <strong>the</strong> altar by<br />

<strong>the</strong> body bearers, <strong>the</strong> organist playing <strong>the</strong> funeral
