scarcely even breathing room. Stage and floor<br />

were alike crowded. There were over two thousand<br />

persons inside <strong>the</strong> doors, and double that<br />

number turned reluctantly away after finding it<br />

impossible to get in. In point of numbers it was<br />

<strong>the</strong> largest meeting ever ga<strong>the</strong>red in a Washington<br />

hall. The occasion was as equally remarkable<br />

as <strong>the</strong> attendance in bringing toge<strong>the</strong>r all <strong>the</strong><br />

most prominent colored citizens of <strong>the</strong> district, as<br />

well as many distinguished whites. All <strong>the</strong> famous<br />

leaders of <strong>the</strong> race were present—<strong>Frederick</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong>,<br />

Blanche Bruce, Richard T. Greener, John F<br />

Cook, Rev. Francis Grimke, and o<strong>the</strong>rs. Present<br />

with <strong>the</strong>m were such white representatives as Col.<br />

R. G. Ingersoll, Rev. J. E. Rankin, Judge Shellabarger,<br />

President Patton of Howard University,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rs equally famous for <strong>the</strong>ir efforts in <strong>the</strong><br />

religious and political world in behalf of equal<br />

rights and justice. Hundreds of white ladies<br />

were seated on <strong>the</strong> stage and in <strong>the</strong> audience.<br />
