I saw him like a monarch stand<br />

With Lincoln's edict in his hand,<br />

With lips infused from heaven's fire,<br />

With thoughts that would all time inspire<br />

Transfigured on Columbia's sod;<br />

A living type from Freedom's God ;<br />

Incarnate soul of Liberty<br />

He stood —a race and land were free.<br />

I saw again God's pioneer<br />

In grand repose upon his bier.<br />

The lines that showed <strong>the</strong> reaper's path<br />

Were softened with death's aftermath.<br />

But yet that face more grandly taught<br />

Of will and power, of battles fought,<br />

Of victories won for Liberty.<br />

The crown at last, <strong>the</strong> soul was free.<br />

MISS MARY s. ANTHONY'S TRIBUTE.<br />

Miss Mary S. Anthony began her remarks by<br />

saying that she felt that <strong>the</strong> women of Rochester<br />

must speak a word in eulogy of <strong>Frederick</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong>.<br />

Continuing she spoke as follows: —<br />

" It is so seldom that any person, man or<br />

woman, born amidst <strong>the</strong> most unfavorable surroundings,<br />

making a life-work of <strong>the</strong> most<br />

unpopular subjects, lives as did this husband and<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r to see <strong>the</strong> world come to recognize <strong>the</strong><br />

beautiful precepts of <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rhood of man,<br />

that <strong>the</strong> most hopeful and best word one can say<br />

is, thank God and take courage.<br />

" When we think of <strong>the</strong> first years of his life<br />

in our midst and compare <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> last<br />

visit he made here with <strong>the</strong> presidential party of
