John M. Harlan of <strong>the</strong> United States Supreme<br />

Court, and Professor W S. Scarborough of Wilberforce<br />

University.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> pulpit sat <strong>the</strong> speakers and a number of<br />

persons specially invited.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> front row of seats sat <strong>the</strong> twelve bodybearers<br />

taken from <strong>the</strong> ranks of <strong>the</strong> colored<br />

letter carriers of Washington, in full uniform:<br />

John H. George, Richard B. Peters, John W-<br />

Curry, W H. Marshall, W H. Cowan, H. W<br />

Hewlejtt, Mercer S. Alexander, John D. Butler,<br />

Raymond Russell, and Dorsey Seville.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> altar sat many pastors of city churches.<br />

There were present delegations from New<br />

York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk, Annapolis<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r cities.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> reserved seats in <strong>the</strong> body of <strong>the</strong><br />

church, to <strong>the</strong> number of five hundred, had been<br />

filled <strong>the</strong> doors were opened to <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

Within a very few minutes every seat in <strong>the</strong> vast<br />

auditorium was occupied, a very small part of<br />

<strong>the</strong> great multitude outside gaining admission.
