with instructions to convey <strong>the</strong> same with her<br />

compliments to his fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>Frederick</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n residing in Rochester. In 1871, having<br />

been detailed to accompany as clerk <strong>the</strong> annexation<br />

commissioners to Santo Domingo, he made<br />

with <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> tour of <strong>the</strong> Island of Hayti and<br />

Santo Domingo. Four years after this he was<br />

appointed by President Grant United States<br />

Consul to Pureto, Santo Domingo, resigning in<br />

1878 by reason of <strong>the</strong> last illness and death of<br />

his wife. Returning to America he settled in<br />

Corona, New York, where he was for a time<br />

engaged in <strong>the</strong> West India commission business.<br />

December 30, 1880, he married Miss Laura A.<br />

Haley of Canandaigua, N. Y., and two years later<br />

was appointed an examiner in <strong>the</strong> Pension Bureau,<br />

where he is at present employed.<br />

Since residing in Washington, Mr. <strong>Douglass</strong><br />

has held several important commands in <strong>the</strong><br />

District National Guard, has been a member of<br />

<strong>the</strong> staff of three commanders-in-chief of <strong>the</strong><br />

Grand Army of <strong>the</strong> Republic, and is at present<br />

major, commanding <strong>the</strong> Capital City Guard Corps,<br />

an independent military organization of Washington.<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> consolidation of <strong>the</strong> city<br />

and county schools, from 1871 to 1874, he was<br />

secretary and treasurer of <strong>the</strong> county schools,<br />

filling during <strong>the</strong> same period <strong>the</strong> position of<br />

school trustee. In this latter position he was
