Haentjens, secretary of <strong>the</strong> legation, represented<br />

<strong>the</strong> Haytien government. He expressed in <strong>the</strong><br />

French language <strong>the</strong> personal regret of <strong>the</strong> members<br />

of <strong>the</strong> legation at <strong>the</strong> death of <strong>the</strong> man <strong>the</strong>y<br />

all knew and loved, and also <strong>the</strong> regret of <strong>the</strong><br />

Haytien republic over <strong>the</strong> loss of one who was<br />

<strong>the</strong> greatest benefactor of his race.<br />

Hon. John S. Durham, ex-United States minister<br />

to Hayti, who was seated in <strong>the</strong> pulpit, came<br />

forward by request and translated into English<br />

<strong>the</strong> remarks of Mr. Haentjens.<br />

Bishop A. W Wayman of Baltimore, whose<br />

acquaintance with Mr. <strong>Douglass</strong> covered a long<br />

period, made a few appropriate remarks.<br />

Rev. W B. Derrick of New York followed in a<br />

brief address, dwelling upon <strong>the</strong> services which<br />

<strong>the</strong> deceased had rendered his race and mankind.<br />

Miss Susan B. Anthony, after expressing <strong>the</strong><br />

sorrow she felt at <strong>the</strong> death of Mr. <strong>Douglass</strong>,<br />

with whom her association had been especially<br />

cordial and friendly on account of like views<br />

entertained by <strong>the</strong>m on woman suffrage and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r questions of national interest, read <strong>the</strong> following<br />

letter from Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton,<br />

who could not be present because of sickness: —<br />

"Taking up <strong>the</strong> morning Tribune, <strong>the</strong> first<br />

words that caught my eye thrilled my very soul.<br />

'<strong>Frederick</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong> is dead!' What vivid
