written matter, or platform oratory, or in companionship,<br />

<strong>Frederick</strong> <strong>Douglass</strong> was never an<br />

occasional man, but ever guarded, ever apt and<br />

ready; never disappointing those who heard him.<br />

Coming into his presence, his simple, unassuming<br />

manner soon impressed you with <strong>the</strong> greatness<br />

of his character.<br />

His tenderness of heart, love of little children<br />

and of young people, his high regard for womanhood,<br />

with that brave sympathy for human<br />

sufferings everywhere, marked <strong>the</strong> trend of his<br />

great soul. " He regarded man as man, and all<br />

men as bro<strong>the</strong>rs."<br />

How befitting, <strong>the</strong>refore, was it for such a man<br />

to die on such an occasion, discussing with<br />

delight such a subject!<br />

One whose life was devoted, as Mr. <strong>Douglass</strong>'<br />

has been, in conflict for manhood freedom, on what<br />

occasion, and from what place more appropriate<br />

for such a soul to take its flight from labor to<br />

reward than from an assembly of women of <strong>the</strong><br />

world, who are striving for larger liberty and<br />

higher development of <strong>the</strong>ir sex in <strong>the</strong> interest<br />

of wife, mo<strong>the</strong>r, daughter, sister, and home !<br />
