EDITORIAL Celebrating 100 years KICKING OFF OUR CENTENNIAL RIGHT Welcome to our 2007 Imaging USA issue. What a way to start the year! I’m happy to report that the magazine in your hands is the biggest issue ever produced in Professional Photographer’s 100-year history. And yes, you read that right: Professional Photographer turns 100 this year. That’s a full century working to serve the photographic community. (The magazine wasn’t always named Professional Photographer. It started life in 1907 as a diminutive black-and-white photographic journal edited and produced by Charles Abel, titled Abel’s Photographic Weekly.) Now, 100 years later, we’re humbled to still be a part of such a vibrant, stirring industry that has both evolved at lightning speed and adhered to the time-honored principles that were at its core a century ago. As the industry has changed, Professional Photographer has followed suit, the latest evolution illustrated by the magazine’s online presence, PPmag.com. On PPmag.com this month, we’re introducing a bevy of exciting new features and content we hope will excite you. No matter what you’re hankering to learn more about, we have articles for you. We’ve posted archived features from the pages of the magazine, organized by specialty and topic so they’re easily accessed with a few keystrokes. Portraits, weddings, seniors, marketing, business, products, technology, the list goes on. You can consider Professional Photographer Online to be your business resource library. Another cool feature, from now on we’ll be posting our Folio section online. Each month, we ask the creators of the images in PPA’s annual Loan Collection to tell us how they got that shot. It’s our most popular department in the magazine, and now you’ll be able to head online to check out a growing gallery of images and the stories behind the images from years past. We want to thank you for your loyalty and readership, both online and off. We think 2007 promises to be an exciting year for our industry. We look forward to making it 101! ■ Cameron Bishopp Director of Publications cbishopp@ppa.com 10 • www.ppmag.com technology editor JOAN SHERWOOD jsherwood@ppa.com features editor LESLIE HUNT lhunt@ppa.com editor at large JEFF KENT jkent@ppa.com PROFESSIONAL director of publications CAMERON BISHOPP cbishopp@ppa.com technical editors ANDREW RODNEY, ELLIS VENER art director/production manager DEBBIE TODD dtodd@ppa.com manager, publications and sales/strategic alliances KARISA GILMER kgilmer@ppa.com sales and marketing assistant CHERYL PEARSON cpearson@ppa.com director of sales and strategic alliances SCOTT HERSH, 610-966-2466, shersh@ppa.com western region ad manager BART ENGELS, 847-854-8182, bengels@ppa.com eastern region ad manager KRISTIAN KLIPSCH-SMITH, 404-522-8600, x279, kklipsch@ppa.com circulation consultant MOLLIE O’SHEA, moshea@ppa.com editorial offices Professional Photographer 229 Peachtree Street NE, Suite 2200, Atlanta, GA 30303-1608 U.S.A. 404-522-8600; FAX: 404-614-6406 Professional Photographer (ISSN 1528-5286) is published monthly subscriptions Professional Photographer P.O. With reputations and livelihoods on the line with every choice they make, Canon innovation speaks directly to their needs and desires for better tools. The PIXMA Pro9000 is part of Canon’s total workflow system, a system of tools that puts leading-edge technologies at the service of creative expression, and brings joy, efficiency, and quality to the journey from concept to print. Find out more at the Canon Digital Learning Center: http://photoworkshop.com/canon “ The Pro9000 has great color and incredible speed.” Eddie Tapp, PrintMaster “CanonPrintMasters”areaselectgroup ofphotographerswhoshootwithCanon EOSSystemcamerasandprintexclusively withCanonProfessionalPrinters. Eddie Tapp is an award-winning photographer, lecturer, author and Canon PrintMaster with more than 20 years of distinguished experience in digital imaging. “The PIXMA Pro9000 gives me exceptional color control, which is a big plus for my kind of specialized imaging,” said Tapp. Canon’s ChromaLife100 8-color ink technology, which includes dedicated Red and Green inks, reproduces a much wider color gamut than any previous dye-based inkjet printer. Moreover, prints using archival quality paper resist fading for up to 100 years when kept in albums and typically exhibit 30-year light fastness and 10-year gas fastness.* “Both quality and longevity are critical in today’s workflow,” added Tapp.“The Pro9000 performs exceedingly well with a wide variety of media types.” * Canon cannot guarantee the longevity of prints: results may vary depending on printed image, drying time, display/storage conditions and environmental factors.
